[On Board SS General Lee]
Dear Mother and Dad,-
Well after twelve days of water
water everywhere the coastal hills
of Japan are looming up in front
of us. Our fellow passengers woke
us up at eight o'clock this morning
to see the first vessel visible
sin we left the Colombia river.
We have had strenuous weather,
and most of the people have been
sick quite a bit. I felt it the
first three days, although I only
missed one meal, but after that
I was all right. Gwen spent the
first week in bed. Everyone has
been up for the past week, and
we have had lots of fun. On my
birthday they had a beautiful cake
all decorated and everything for
me.
As you know there are eleven passengers on board, We bounce around like peas in a pod. This little old boat had a movement all its own. Gwen's trunk went all over the cabin, and at lunch one day food was flying everyplace. You see we went further north than any of us thought we would. We were off the coast of Alaska, and about 60 miles off the coast of the Allution Islands. We had to tie ourselves in bed with blankets.
We are eating at the Pursers table. He has been very nice to us. We have had movies twice a week, and in the evening we turn on the phonograph and dance.
The food is excellent, and there
has been plenty of it. After my
dizziness wore off I could not
seem to get filled up, and I have
been eating like a pig ever since.
Day before yesterday the Captain let us steer the ship for a while. It was lots of fun although the officers nearly popped laughing at us. The captain is a long legged Norwegian and when we feed him peanuts he lets us do as we please.
Mr. Cannon who sits at our table,
is very nice, but yesterday morning
he woke us up about six o'clock
playing You Can't Get 'em Up under
our window, so last night we made
a dummy out of pillows stuck it
in his bed along with the shoes
ties and everything we could find.
As I look out of the window the hills are growing bigger. By golly it must be Japan although it looks like Catalina to me.
Lots of Love,
Jeannette.
