[On Board SS General Lee]

Dear Mother and Dad,-

Just a line to let you know that we have at last arrived safely in Shanghai. The river is teaming with live of every description.

To day we have said goodbye to most of our passengers, so from here to Hong Kong we will have practically a private yacht. Some of the people have been very nice. We have gleaned a cigarette case and a bottle of perfume, some hankies and some toys from them as remembrance gifts.

We are getting more and more excited as time gets nearer. Just think in two or three more days we will arrive at our destination.

You should see the Chinese sandpans, and junks with their funny shaped sails and queerly dressed people in them. From Kobe we have had a young Chinese couple on board. The girl is just like a doll. She wears little embroidered Mandarin coasts although her hair is bobbed and permanented.

Last night we caught the Captain on the Pansy trick and he said he had lost his dignity and the ship had lost its morale so he was going to abdicate in favor of us.

If it were not for the funny little boats and people one would hardly think they were on the other side of the world. The cities are extremely modern and very lovely. The Japanese straights we passed through yesterday were perfectly gorgeous. The flowers were growing near the waters edge and were brilliant in color, but scentless, they told us that none of the flowers of Japan had any scent.

Well it won't be long now. We shake every time we think about it.

Lots of Love,

Jeannette.
