Portland

Safe in Portland with everything all buttoned up. Baggage arrived and now is checked to the ship--ticket and everything. Have $100 more in A. B. A. checks which leaves me $35 light. Money not enough. We are all about $40 light. Chinese agree to settle at Hong Kong.

I hope I didn't make too big a sap of myself at the station. Farewells are hard for me.

Deeds is here and Terrill arrives tonight. I have a stateroom with bath to myself on the boat. Not bad.

I found out that the mail between Hong Kong and Canton is not so hot. So if you wish to write me send the letter c/o Mr.Berringer, American Commercial Attaché, Hong Kong. He will see that I get it. If you wish to cable address it like this-- A M C O M A T Baird, Hong Kong. Will save you plenty of money; costs 56 cents a word.

Deeds has our tickets marked to Manila. Isn't he the great little sh-h-h artist? Then too, our names do not appear on the passenger list.

Had a nice trip up. It was especially nice by Mt. Shasta. The rails follow a river through the mountains--snow 6 feet deep. I thought of Jeannette trying to drive through that.

The ship is a refrigerator boat with accommodations for about 100. The darn thing isn't very big, and Deeds says he is addicted to seasickness. Well, it seems that we are finally about to depart in spite of everything. I don't know what the future will bring, but this traveling at someone else's expense isn't bad. When Terrill gets here we will have a pow-wow and see what Deeds has done with the money. I'm interested.

It is 6 P.M. and I can imagine you all around the table. I wish that I could be with you to see what has been going on down there. Just wait, until I return--won't we have a session. Tomorrow will find me on the bounding deep and probably sick as a dog.

Take care of yourselves and let me know all about you.

Love,
Stu.
